studio update

so the studio is now officially open for business. we have a four color printing press up and running and have already completed a few small jobs. in other good news, spring is here and it is now tolerable to be outside for more than a five minute period.

along with the printing setup i have put together my drawing desk so that work will be done where it is supposed to be instead of the kitchen table.
on top of the new setup we also got a sweet couch for the studio space. it's pretty perfect for relaxing and for guests who are visiting the space.

now that things are up and running we are able to take on jobs for other people and will be working on our first line. until then its time to enjoy spring.

[REC]

so i finally was able to see this film that many people have been talking about. i have been out of the realm of horror for a while so i am not up on all the new movies. i remember seeing the preview for quarantine and not being interested at all. maybe it was because of the girl from dexter. i'm really glad i didn't see it because [REC] the original film from Spain is sooo good. it starts off with a simple set up a camera and reporter do a ride along with a fire team.

it looks to be a routine call but crazy violence erupts. there is biting and blood and some very good suspense. suspense, not something you get in modern horror. also there is a distinct lack of music. there is none at all and it really makes it seem as if the "found" footage is real. that coupled with the fact that all of the actors seem to be unknown, and really fit as if they are the characters they play.

the directors use the sole cameraman to their advantage because you really don't know what is happening. they also kept the movie to about an hour which is the length of a miniDV tape. something cloverfield neglected to care about. it was their careful approach to the small elements in this film that really sold me. i felt like i was tired of the "found" film approach but maybe that is just when it is done wrong. the directors do everything right and make a tight little film. it may not be for everyone but as the directors said "we wanted to make the kind of film that we would have wanted at 15" and i think that really sums it up for me too.

how could you not watch a movie that has zombie children!?!

If you didn't get to see them all seven illustrations are up on my website www.redskyedesign.com. also available in the shop is a limited edition 18 X 24 screen print called "the magnificent seven." there are limited quantities available but it is a great looking print (printed on recycled paper). if you were not able to attend or not able to go home with anything this is a good item. a portion of the proceeds will go right to the sanctuary. take care. new stuff coming soon.

What Cloverfield Should Have Been

was District 9. That movie was an awesome alien flick and very topical racial/political movie. Way awesome and the exploding bodies was the icing on the cake. I think that there should be more movies like this. I really hope that Hollywood takes notice of the all non-big name actors and we get more quality made movies without the same douche bag actors running around. Im keeping my fingers crossed more more just like this.

amazing alien effects. the digital work was seamless, at times it was tough to tell on camera effects and post production work. the weta workshop gets better every year.
