screen printing: a walk through

This is the process that i went through to create the hoodies for Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest from start to finish. The project went very well and i was very happy with the outcome of the hoodies. They are available at the csnw website for a steal at $30, get them here while they last.

So the image we chose for the hoodies was the drawing of missy that i made for the the art auction last october.

Once we knew which image we wanted to use i went to work trying to figure out the placement and the font to be used. The only instruction i received was that it will be a zip-up and that the image should go on the front.

Once we had the placement figured out I went to work prepping the screen while waiting for the hoodies to arrive. First a positive is created on a sheet of vellum.

The screen is then placed in the exposing unit. Light does not pass through the parts that are black and makes it so the ink can pass through. Once the screen is burned the image must be washed out.

Once the image is washed out you can print. At redskye design we have a four-color printing press but for this job we just needed 1 color. We lined up the screen with our image and then taped off the screen.

We added the ink to the screen and we were ready to print.

We did a few test prints before we started the hoodies to make sure everything was coming through correctly.

Then we started the hoodies. It didn't take long to print them all.

I had to try one on once it was completed. The hoodies came out great and fit great!

Before we knew it they were all done.

And sold out just as fast! The first printing was gone before they could be posted online but we have since done a second printing and could be doing another in the very near future if they keep selling like they do. We are very happy with the way they turned out and are happy to work with the chimpanzee sanctuary northwest. Don't forget to to pick one up here.

studio update

so the studio is now officially open for business. we have a four color printing press up and running and have already completed a few small jobs. in other good news, spring is here and it is now tolerable to be outside for more than a five minute period.

along with the printing setup i have put together my drawing desk so that work will be done where it is supposed to be instead of the kitchen table.
on top of the new setup we also got a sweet couch for the studio space. it's pretty perfect for relaxing and for guests who are visiting the space.

now that things are up and running we are able to take on jobs for other people and will be working on our first line. until then its time to enjoy spring.

[REC]

so i finally was able to see this film that many people have been talking about. i have been out of the realm of horror for a while so i am not up on all the new movies. i remember seeing the preview for quarantine and not being interested at all. maybe it was because of the girl from dexter. i'm really glad i didn't see it because [REC] the original film from Spain is sooo good. it starts off with a simple set up a camera and reporter do a ride along with a fire team.

it looks to be a routine call but crazy violence erupts. there is biting and blood and some very good suspense. suspense, not something you get in modern horror. also there is a distinct lack of music. there is none at all and it really makes it seem as if the "found" footage is real. that coupled with the fact that all of the actors seem to be unknown, and really fit as if they are the characters they play.

the directors use the sole cameraman to their advantage because you really don't know what is happening. they also kept the movie to about an hour which is the length of a miniDV tape. something cloverfield neglected to care about. it was their careful approach to the small elements in this film that really sold me. i felt like i was tired of the "found" film approach but maybe that is just when it is done wrong. the directors do everything right and make a tight little film. it may not be for everyone but as the directors said "we wanted to make the kind of film that we would have wanted at 15" and i think that really sums it up for me too.

how could you not watch a movie that has zombie children!?!

What Cloverfield Should Have Been

was District 9. That movie was an awesome alien flick and very topical racial/political movie. Way awesome and the exploding bodies was the icing on the cake. I think that there should be more movies like this. I really hope that Hollywood takes notice of the all non-big name actors and we get more quality made movies without the same douche bag actors running around. Im keeping my fingers crossed more more just like this.

amazing alien effects. the digital work was seamless, at times it was tough to tell on camera effects and post production work. the weta workshop gets better every year.

leonard cohen

just saw leonard cohen at the wamu theatre in seattle on thursday and it was amazing. for being 74 the man puts on an amazing show. well he puts on an amazing show period. sounds better than his albums! it was a lot of fun. we went to seattle early and eat a ton of food at ROXY's which was good as always. then we headed over to the QWEST field for the show. the theatre was really nice for being inside a stadium and we were pretty close too. tickets were selling for $400 for the show. insanity. we got some sweet stuff 2 shirts a tote bag and a limited to 50 poster of the show. it was awesome and then when walking out we saw spencer moody from the murder city devils. awesome. after the show we drove home. it was a long drive but definately worth it. i was sick all day friday but im fine now. now the last three shows we have seen were epic; leonard cohen, murder city devils, and nick cave and the badseeds.
